The Kansas City Chiefs got better on Thursday—signing former first-round pick and playmaking free-agent receiver Sammy Watkins, who spent last season with the Los Angeles Rams.

1. Watkins originally entered the league as a first-round pick
Watkins is a name that most football fans are already familiar.
He was a two-time first-team All-American at Clemson before be Men’s Toronto Blue Jays Majestic Authentic 18 Curtis Granderson Canada Day Red Scarlet Flex Base Jersey ing selected as the No. 4 overall pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2014.
In his last collegiate game, which came against Ohio State in the 2014 Orange Bowl, Watkins caught 16 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns in a 40-35 win for the Tigers. He was named MVP of the game and decided to forego his senior year and enter the NFL Draft.
In three seasons with the Bills, Watkins had 153 receptions for 2,459 yards with 17 touchdowns. He missed some time in 2016 with a broken foot and ended up playing in just eight games that year.
The Bills would ultimately decline his fifth-year option later that spring and he ended up being traded to the Rams for cornerback E.J. Gaines and a second-round pick a few weeks prior to the 2017 season.
And last year with the Rams—despite joining the team just 30 days prior to their opening game of the season, Watkins finished with 39 receptions for 593 yards and a team-best eight touchdowns.
2. The guy makes plays
In his career, Watkins has averaged a ridiculous 15.9 yards per reception, which ranks sixth-best in the league since 2014.
It’s playmaking quantified, and for reference, Tyreek Hill averaged 15.8 yards per reception last year (and 13.1 in his career).

3. Watkins has shown a variety of skills at receiver
According to ESPN’s Matt Bowen, Watkins’ versatility and abilities are a great fit with Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid.
“In that offense, look for Andy Reid to scheme up opportunities for Watkins. Think of the underneath passing game (slants, hitches, crossers), the inside cuts and the high-percentage throws for quarterback Patrick Mahomes to get Watkins the ball in space (screens, bubbles). Plus, Watkins has the top-end speed to stretch the secondary down the field.”
Furthermore, the folks at Sports Info Solutions put out some more information regarding Watkins’ ability to run multiple routes Curtis Granderson Jersey , which should serve him well in Reid’s creative offense.
“Sammy Watkins most targeted routes over the past two years were:
“His average depth of target (ADOT) was higher than league average on all 5 of those routes.”
These numbers show, among other things, that Watkins wasn’t simply Men’s Majestic Flexbase Authentic 57 Jaime Garcia Toronto Blue Jays Scarlet Canada Day Jersey Red a one-trick guy.
Also, Watkins was one of just two players (Brandon Coleman, Saints) in the NFL last year to play at least 60 percent of his team’ offensive snaps and not drop a pass, per Pro Football Focus.

4. Watkins has played at Arrowhead Stadium once in his career, and it was memorable
On November 29, 2015, Watkins—then with the Bills, had the second-most yards receiving in a game in his career, and it came against the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.
Watkins finished the day with six receptions for 158 yards and two touchdowns—one of just four multi-touchdown games in his career up to this point. He averaged 26.3 yards per reception that day.
Here’s to hoping that trend continues now that he’s on the right side of things.
5. Watkins shared that he’s excited to join Reid and the Chiefs
